I grew up 5 miles away from Lake Michigan. We swam almost everyday in the summer, and our favorite beach (especially while we were young) was what is now the Duck Lake State park.
The reason it was so family friendly is that there is a small, natural, shallow channel running between Lake Michigan and Duck Lake. That means that there are two lakes to choose from! The smaller (and WARMER) Duck Lake on one side joined by natural dunes and a long beach walk on the Lake Michigan side.
There are bathrooms on site. It a wonderful place for families with small children as the small children can swim in the small/shallow channel and bigger kids can swim in either Duck Lake or Lake Michigan. Parents can sit in the middle and be near everyone!
It's worth a visit, you won't be sorry!
